Please note: due to the overwhelming response we have gotten in the last six months, it is taking longer than before to respond to script submissions. We received around 300 submissions between August and November alone. That is great, but it does take a little more time to make sure each script gets an honest and thorough appraisal. Due to the amount of submissions we have adjusted our selection policy to a rolling basis as well. We are no longer considering plays for production times based on when we received them. If you have submitted a play recently, we thank you for your patience
Halcyon Theatre welcomes scripts and script synopses.
Here is what our company looks for in scripts: Halcyon explores how stories and the art of storytelling can create a cultural dialogue that is a uniting force, telling stories from all backgrounds and places. Our first criterion is that it is a great story. We look at playwrights from around the world -- at plays and stories throughout history that have universal themes that cross cultural boundaries. We look for plays that lend themselves to exploring forms of storytelling from differing cultures and how they can coexist and strengthen each other. We try to tell stories that have a Mythic, Epic Quality, challenging audiences; big stories that have a heart and are entertaining. Stylistically we look for plays that are not tied to strict realism and move beyond the four walls of realism.
We accept full-length and one-act plays and musicals. We prefer full scripts, but we will also accept inquiries. If you are submitting a musical, please include a demo cd. We accept submissions via both Email and Snail mail, and we will accept scripts that have had a previous production.
If you’re choosing to send in a full script, please also include synopsis, character breakdown and production history.
If you’re thinking of sending us an inquiry, the preferred method would be to send the following: · One page synopsis of the script · Character breakdown of the script · Fifteen page dialogue sample from the script · Production History including all readings and workshops
If you’d like to submit a script or synopsis via email, please send it attached as a PDF or Word compatible format to

. If submitting a musical, please send the accompanying demo cd via snail mail. Please do not include a full-script in the body of the email.
If you would like to send a script or synopsis via snail mail, please send it to: Tony Adams, Artistic Director, Halcyon Theatre, 3334 W. Wilson, #1, Chicago, IL 60625. If you’d like the script returned to you, include an SASE of appropriate size.
Scripts are accepted and read throughout the year. Submissions are considered for production on a rolling basis. Response time is typically 6-9 months. Normally we will respond in the method of submission. If a submission is electronically sent, we will respond electronically and if it is received via postal mail we will respond through the mail.
Please don't send us a link to your website in lieu of sending us a script. We will only accept submissions with materials attached/included.
We are a small company with limited resources who read hundreds of scripts each year for our three show season and festival. Inevitably we will receive great scripts that we cannot produce. Sometimes we will receive a great script that doesn't fit with our mission or company. We will from time to time pass strong scripts that don't necessarily fit Halcyon along to other theatre companies we know. If you do not want us to forward your script please let us know.
Please Note: in order to save trees and keep response times as low as possible we coordinate our script reading electronically. To help facilitate multiple people reading a script at the same time, paper scripts we receive will be scanned and distributed electronically to our readers. By submitting your script to Halcyon Theatre, you are giving permission to our creating an electronic copy and storing it for internal purposes only. If you would like to opt-out of having your submission scanned, please let us know when you submit it and we will respect your request.
