Thoughts of a 3am nursing…

So, I started thinking about the blog while I was feeding Tony, Jr. this morning. And I thought “Oh, my God… What if Gen is writing a blog too? Everyone will think I’m copying her!” Gen is my friend who is the Artistic Director of Infamous Commonwealth. She had a baby a couple months ahead of me. She got a Jeff for Kentucky Cycle when she was 8 months pregnant or something. (and by the way, Infamous Commonwealth does really great work, and you should go see their new show. Not that I have, b/c of the baby thing… but I WANT to….)

So, this is the kind of stream-of unconsciouness that I was experiencing at 3am this morning… then I thought, “Well, Jenn…”…. “it’s kind of like if 3 companies do the same show at the same time…is that necessarily bad? I guess not, as long as each one is invested and true to the word of the playwright and leaves the audience motivated somehow… I mean, you shouldn’t do Hamlet on the moon, just because 2 other companies are doing Hamlet… but if your Hamlet is really invested, and the words ring true, and as a director you get it so right that I as an audience member BELIEVE that Hamlet is on the moon…. does that mean you shouldn’t do it just because someone else already has Hamlet speaking the speech trippingly?” anyway…

Whoa, weird… Tony just reminded me about the Hamlet discussion going on in Chicago right now… no reference was intended…

I think it’s important that we keep doing the classics… and that we continue to have debate about them… there should BE bad productions… how else do you know what the good ones are… Seeing 3 bad productions of the Scottish play is what has made me want to direct it so badly… That old “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is” adage. Of course, I hope to be a GOOD blog and a GOOD production of the Scottish play (with the text firmly intact)…

Which brings me to another point… why do people think that if it was written before 1986 it is somehow irrelevant and outdated?

Which is a blog for another time…. also for another time is what to do when your theatre partner husband who created the opportunity to blog is now looking over your shoulder as you blog and MAKING EDITS as you type… I think the biggest thing you lose as a mom is your privacy… which is ironic that I am writing that in a public blog…

Anyway, now I have something to think about during THIS morning’s 3 am feeding!
