To Bring or Not To Bring, That is the question…
What to do when you have a baby, and you want to go to a play or a staged reading or a concert? Do you bring the babe, and say sneerers be damned? Stand in the back of the audience, ready to book it if the baby bawls? Pay for a sitter every time, and end up in the poorhouse with no money to pay for the costumes your next show will surely need? Alienate your friends for always trying to get free sitting (come on, it’s PRACTICE for you!)?… Or stay home, and let the artist relationships you are trying to cultivate go into the wastelands…. How many times can you say “I want to come, but…”
I’m being a little dramatic (DUH!) but it’s a toughy… and it’s a bummer not to be able to go to stuff… WITH my husband… and when I do, a part of me always misses being home…or to have to beg the bouncer to please let the baby in, as the cast is inside and we just want to hang out for a bit…
On the flip side, we have been really lucky to have a great baby that likes being social. We brought him to a lot of rehearsals for Yerma, we started taking him to restaurants when he was a week old, and he is SUCH a social baby because of it. I LOVE having him with us at theatre events. And it has been amazing to work with people who have children, love children, and are accepting of him being there…
So, you make some sacrifices and get some benefits, I guess…
